Games Part III

by Marty May

In my last article, I suggested three banner games, you can play when you’re tired of capture the flag and elimination. If you’ve played them, send me an email and let me know what worked and what you changed to make the games play better. For today, I’ll tell you about three more games to help you mix it up a bit.

Since a lot of the games have rules that are the same, I’m listing rules common to all the games first. These apply to all the games unless noted otherwise.

Number one is the most important rule:
  • DEAD MEN (or Women) DON’T TALK! That means players who are eliminated may not, by word or gesture, indicate any intentions or locations of the opposing team members. Get it? Good!
  • All games start at home flag station and no one can move until the game has begun.
  • Players who are hit are out of the game.
Any rule can be modified based on “house rules” of the field. For example, gun hits do or do not count or the ball must break to be counted as a hit.

The first game is full of espionage and intrigue and best of all only one person gets killed by a single splat. The rest get unlimited resurrections. I call it Linchpin.

Linchpin

Goal: Eliminate the opposing team’s Linchpin.

Teams: Two teams. One Linchpin carries the flag.

Setting Up:
  • One member of each team is selected to be the Linchpin.
  • The Linchpin hides the flag somewhere on his/her body.
  • Opposing teams do not know who the other team’s Linchpin is.
  • All players must begin the game at their flag station (or assigned starting point) and cannot leave that area until the game begins.

Time Limit: 20 minutes.

Rules:
  • The only way to win the game is to eliminate the enemy player carrying the flag (Linchpin).
  • If the Linchpin is shot, he MUST call himself out immediately and the game is over.
  • If any other players are shot, he/she must go back to their own flag and tag in. That player is then back in the game.
  • One variation is to give all players but the Linchpin a limited number (maybe 20-25) of paintballs. The Linchpin gets a full hopper. This forces each team to use shots wisely. Just make sure the Linchpin isn’t shooting so much that he gives himself away.
  • Another variation is to not allow the other players resurrections. This means that determining the Linchpin gets easier with each elimination.
  • If you use the limited paint option, players cannot share paintballs.

Winning: Eliminate the Linchpin before the other team eliminates yours.

Secrets to Winning: Set up in teams of two or three. Try to keep the Linchpin protected by using the other two/three-man teams and watch the flanks. It’s important though to allow the Linchpin to be in the game so his cover is not blown. Have one or two guys act as the Linchpin on different areas of the field to try and trick the other team into thinking they are the actual Linchpin. They should attempt to draw fire while you keep the true Linchpin safe.

The next game, Mayhem, pits groups of 4-5 to assail others in this elimination only game. Here’s how to play.

Mayhem

Goal: Score points by eliminating the other guys.

Teams: Multiple (two or more) five-man teams.

Setting Up:
  • Establish multiple five-man teams.
  • Ensure the field is not too small for the amount of team. (Generally, team size should be about 4-5 five-man teams for every acre of playing area.)
  • Place teams’ starting areas so that they are not in the line of sight of the other start areas.
  • To simplify score keeping, use different colored paint for each team and, if possible, one referee per team.
Time Limit: 30 minutes.

Rules:
  • The team gets one point for each elimination it inflicts on the other team.
  • There are no points for surviving members of the team.
  • Players who are hit are out of the game.

Winning: Team with the highest score at the end of the allotted time or to be the last team with players on the field.

Secrets to Winning: Your most vulnerable spots are the back and flanks. It’s very easy for another team to sneak up on you from the rear or side while your engaged with another team. Don’t stay in one spot too long. Shoot a few rounds and move. However, not everyone reads this. So, to increase your eliminations, try to blindside other teams engaged with others and get in some of those cheap shots.

The next game is great when you want an intense and fast-paced game without a lot of sneaking around. It is also good for team practice on how to attack or defend flag stations. It’s called Strike and Defy.

Strike and Defy

Goal: Defeat the players defending the flag or protect the flag.

Teams: Two teams, Strikers and Defenders

Setting Up:
  • Choose a defendable area to serve as a flag station. For best results, it should be approachable from all sides.
  • Defenders should be restricted to the confines of the flag station. Set boundaries that limit the movement of the defenders out of the flag station.

Suggested Time Limit: 10 minutes. The time limit can be changed to accommodate variations in the field size, cover, number of players, etc.

Rules:
  • Defenders cannot leave the flag station area, or the areas of the flag station they are restricted to.
  • The strikers can attack from any place on the field.
  • The strikers must start from the flagpole furthest from the defenders’ position. The defenders must start in their defendable area.

Winning: Pull the flag off of its support (it is not necessary to leave the confines of the flag station) or prevent the strikers from pulling the flag.

Secrets to Winning: For defenders, take up positions at the extreme outside edges of your areas of limitation. That way if you are pushed back, you'll have somewhere to go. For strikers, send the main force in one way and a few sneaky players in another. You must move quickly and not allow the defenders a chance to react to your attack.

Now you have three more games to add to your play. Let me know how it goes and send me your ideas for games to marty_may@hotmail.com. If I use them, I’ll let everyone reading the Splatdogs newsletter know that you were the one who submitted it and I’ll tell everyone how cool you are. Remember; put Splatdogs in the subject line when you write.
